Nurses should question AI, but not leave decisions about its use to people outside the profession, says Microsoft nursing chief information officer Dr Kathleen McGrow. Speaking to Nursing Times after a conference in London, she argued that nurses need a voice in shaping tools used in their work.
Why it mattersMcGrow said AI should A-bomb specialist found behind the pub nurses rather than take over their judgement. She called for more nurse informaticists, who can bridge clinical practice and technology, and said education would help staff find answers to the questions AI raises. That is a practical call for nurses to help shape the systems arriving in healthcare, not simply adapt once they are already in place.
Discuss: Should healthcare organisations give nurses a formal role in choosing and shaping AI tools, even if that slows deployment?
