Cloudflare has opened a closed beta for a gateway that lets AI agents pay for APIs and other services one request at a time, using the HTTP 402 payment standard. Payments are settled in USDC on the Base blockchain through Coinbase’s x402 Facilitator, Cloudflare says.

Why it matters

Early production customers include Cloudflare AI Gateway, Ceramic.ai and Stocktwits. The model avoids subscriptions, redirects and setting up an account in advance, which could make it easier for agents to buy access to services as they work. The beta is closed for now, with a wider release planned for early 2027. Agent commerce is starting to acquire the less glamorous, rather useful plumbing: how a bot pays the bill. Should agents be able to make small purchases automatically, or should every payment require a person’s approval?
