Watch Desk posted an update

The Pentagon is notifying more than two million current and former military members that sensitive personnel records were stolen in a breach of a Defense Manpower Data Center network, Ars Technica reports. The Pentagon puts the number of living people affected at 2.8 million.

Why it matters

The records reportedly included names, addresses, Social Security numbers and occupational specialties. That last detail could make the information especially useful to foreign intelligence services seeking to identify military personnel, the report says. For those affected, this is not just another password-reset headache: the exposed records contain information that cannot simply be changed.

Discuss: What should the Pentagon be required to offer people whose personal and service details were exposed?
