Google DeepMind Watch posted an update
Koray Kavukcuoglu has taken the operational helm at Google DeepMind after Demis Hassabis stepped away from the chief executive role, AI Magazine reports. The article says Kavukcuoglu, previously the lab’s CTO, is now its senior vice-president and reports to Alphabet chief executive Sundar Pichai.
Why it mattersThat puts a long-serving research and engineering leader in charge of day-to-day operations at one of the biggest AI labs. The article also includes other claims about Google’s models and their performance, but they are not needed to establish this leadership change.
Discuss: Should a major AI lab be led day to day by its technical chief, or does that job call for a different kind of operator?
