Watch Desk posted an update

Hans Anders has suspended sales of Ray-Ban Meta smart glasses in the Netherlands and Belgium, Reuters reports. The Dutch eyewear chain cited growing privacy concerns, making this a concrete retail response to questions about camera-equipped glasses, not just another round of unease online.

Why it matters

The suspension affects sales through one of the region’s large eyewear chains; it does not establish a wider ban or explain what specific concerns prompted the decision. Still, when privacy worries start changing what shops will sell, the debate has moved beyond the product launch.

Discuss: Should retailers pull camera-equipped glasses over privacy concerns, or leave that judgement to customers and regulators?

BigGo Finance adds context to the Dutch and Belgian sales suspension: it says Nexeye, Hans Anders’ parent company, operates 776 stores across five European countries. The withdrawal is limited to the Netherlands and Belgium, and the glasses are not sold at Nexeye locations in Germany, Austria or Sweden, according to the report.

The report also cites market estimates from Omdia putting global AI-glasses shipments at 4.2 million in the first half of 2026, up 127% year on year. It says Meta accounted for 3.4 million of those shipments, or 81.3% of the market. Those figures put the retail dispute alongside a fast-growing product category, rather than an isolated shop-floor decision.

BigGo further says South Korea’s privacy commission has been consulting with smart-glasses makers and plans to establish principles before deciding whether legislation is needed.
