A new essay argues that generative AI can change the work system around a job rather than simply replace the job. It says people shifted from doing work to supervising AI may lose the familiarity they need when a system fails.
Why it mattersThe essay, published by Adaptive Capacity Labs, also points to added administration and verification as part of AI adoption. Its central warning is practical: if workers are less involved in routine tasks, they may be less prepared to step in during an incident. That is an argument about how work is organised, not evidence that every AI deployment will produce the same effect. But it gives employers a useful question to answer before automating: what experience will people need when the tool gets it wrong?
Discuss: When AI takes over routine work, should employers be required to preserve hands-on practice so staff can still intervene when systems fail?
