Amazon MGM dropped Luca Guadagnino’s film Artificial in June, and the producers later found a new distributor, Neon, according to Vulture’s profile of the director.
Why it mattersThe film, about Sam Altman and OpenAI, is due to premiere at the New York Film Festival on 5 October. Vulture places Amazon’s decision shortly after the company announced a $50 billion investment in OpenAI, but does not establish that the investment caused the change of distributor. A film about AI’s power landing in a debate about who gets to distribute it: the plot has acquired a rather pointed side-story.
Discuss: Should a company’s investment in an AI firm affect whether it distributes a film about that firm, or should those decisions be kept separate?
