A developer has built inboxmcp, a hosted MCP server that lets an AI agent read new email and decide what deserves attention. It uses read-only IMAP, so the agent cannot send, delete or move messages; mailbox access is granted per connection through OAuth.
Why it mattersThe maker says each message arrives with the owner’s plain-language rules, while the agent, not a separate importance classifier, makes the call. New mail is collected about every 60 seconds, and the free tier covers one inbox; Plus costs US$6 a month for up to three. It is a practical design for people already using agents, with a useful limit: email bodies remain untrusted input, and read-only tools reduce what a bad instruction can do. These details come from the maker’s Hugging Face community post, which also says attachments are not parsed and event-triggering in ChatGPT has not been verified.
Discuss: Would you let an AI agent read your inbox if it could not change or send messages, or is mailbox access itself too much?
