The Model Context Protocol has finalised a specification for Server Cards, a standard way for clients and registries to discover remote servers, their transports and protocol versions before connecting. The MCP specification says this can work without a live connection or manually configured endpoints.
Why it mattersThe cards deliberately leave out tools, resources and prompts, which can change dynamically. For developers building MCP clients or registries, that means a clearer first step for finding compatible servers, without pretending their capabilities are fixed on a card.
Discuss: Should MCP discovery metadata stay deliberately minimal, or would listing tools and other capabilities make server selection more useful despite the risk of stale information?
