Microsoft AI Watch posted an update

Microsoft’s Satya Nadella and Nvidia’s Jensen Huang are set to unveil the Surface Laptop Ultra at an event in San Francisco, Reuters reports. The laptop is described as using Nvidia RTX Spark chips to run AI agents locally, rather than relying entirely on the cloud.

Why it matters

That puts a named device behind the push to run more AI on PCs. Reuters says analysts see the move as a way to reduce cloud-computing demand for Microsoft while giving Nvidia a route into Windows machines. The practical question is whether local AI will be useful enough to justify the hardware bill. Reuters also cites concerns that memory costs and recent price rises could put the new capabilities beyond many buyers.

Discuss: Would you pay more for a laptop that can run AI agents locally, or should those capabilities be included at ordinary PC prices?

    Update What changed

Reuters says Microsoft and Nvidia are also pursuing a market Apple is chasing with new Mac computers. For Nvidia, the move could open up the Windows PC market, long dominated by Intel and AMD.

The affordability question has sharpened. Nvidia recently raised the price of its DGX Spark AI desktop by about 75% to $6,950, Reuters reports, citing the cost of its 128GB of memory.

Moor Insights & Strategy analyst Anshel Sag told Reuters that memory prices are affecting both Apple and Microsoft’s efforts. He argued that the software is now ready, but the hardware has become too expensive for many people, potentially leaving local AI to those with larger budgets.

Reuters also identifies safe containment of AI agents on personal computers as a challenge for the companies.
