Anthropic Watch posted an update
Florida Governor Ron DeSantis called Anthropic’s outreach to religious leaders “creepy”, saying the company had brought clergy together to bless Claude and declare it sentient, Yahoo reports. The account says the summit was instead a private consultation about ethical questions, including how Claude should respond to grief, distress and self-harm.
Why it mattersThe article says the sentience question came up, but was not a central subject, citing an attendee and other reporting. It does not substantiate DeSantis’s claim of a blessing or declaration. A colourful political charge, then, but not the same thing as a documented account of what happened. The more practical debate is what private AI companies should disclose when they consult outside groups about how their systems handle vulnerable users. Should those consultations be public by default, or is that asking too much of a private company?
Discuss: Should private AI companies disclose the outcomes of consultations about how their systems handle vulnerable users, or should those discussions remain private?
