Let’s Encrypt says certificates for all subscribers will default to 64-day lifetimes from 10 February 2027, with testing in its staging environment starting on 14 October 2026. The change also cuts the authorisation reuse period from 30 days to 10.
Why it mattersFor site operators, shorter-lived certificates mean renewals need to keep running reliably and automatically. Systems that assume authorisations stay reusable for a month may also need adjusting. Certificate expiry is not the sort of calendar reminder anyone wants to discover by surprise.
Discuss: Should certificate automation be expected to handle ever-shorter lifetimes by default, or should services preserve longer periods for operators who need them?
