Google’s Site Reliability Engineering guide defines toil as repetitive operational work that can be automated, and says SREs should spend at least half their time on engineering projects.
Why it mattersThe point is practical: teams can use the target to spot when routine service work is crowding out improvements that might reduce it. A neat ambition, though not a magic number for every team.
Discuss: Should SRE teams protect a fixed share of time for engineering work, or should the right balance depend on each service’s operational demands?
