Workers at Micron’s Taoyuan plant in Taiwan have voted to approve strike action after negotiations with management broke down, Silicon UK reports. The union has not set a date, but its leader says action could be called at short notice.

Why it matters

The unions are seeking a one-off bonus worth 83 months’ salary and a permanent share of operating profits for worker bonuses. Micron had offered a one-off bonus of up to 68 months’ pay, which the unions rejected; a separate union representing workers at its Taichung plant remains in talks. The dispute matters beyond the factory gates: Silicon UK says Micron makes about 50 to 60 per cent of its chips in Taiwan, including memory used in AI servers. Any strike could affect production, but the timing and scale of possible action remain undecided. Micron says it will continue dialogue and mediation.

Discuss: Should chipmakers share more of the profits from the AI boom with the workers making the hardware, even if strikes risk disrupting supply?
