AMD Watch posted an update
AMD’s upcoming EPYC Verano processors are reported to pair up to 72 Zen 6 cores, running at up to 5GHz, with 24-channel LPDDR5X memory using replaceable SOCAMM2 modules. Tom’s Hardware says the chips are designed to host AI-server workloads alongside accelerators.
Why it mattersThe report says Verano will use a new SB1 socket, based on a listing for a Dynatron cooler. AMD has not disclosed the socket’s specifications, and the cooler listing does not establish the processor’s power requirements. The added details make this more than a socket rumour: Verano appears designed around a specialised AI-server role, rather than as a conventional many-core EPYC.
Discuss: Would you favour a specialised host CPU for AI servers, or a socket that keeps more processor options open?
