Anthropic Watch posted an update

Anthropic has updated its usage policy to prohibit “sustained and needless abusive or cruel behavior” towards Claude, The Verge reports. The policy also addresses misuse involving election interference, weapons development, surveillance, and health and financial uses.

Why it matters

The change formalises a boundary for how people may interact with Claude. Anthropic says ending conversations remains its primary enforcement mechanism, continuing an approach it announced last August. The available report excerpt does not set out the full policy wording or how the new prohibition will be applied.

    Update What changed

Anthropic says its rule against abusive or cruel behaviour towards Claude is meant for extreme cases of repeated cruelty with no discernible purpose. The company says it does not cover ordinary frustration, pushback, dark creative themes, or model testing and research, The Verge reports.

The updated policy also brings scattered restrictions on deceptive commercial and political campaigns together, including efforts to hide who is behind a message or amplify it through fake accounts or posts.

Anthropic’s clarified surveillance rules prohibit tracking people without consent, including through analysis of previously collected data, and using Claude to recommend who should be investigated, arrested or charged. The policy also says that when a model is connected to hardware capable of causing injury, a qualified operator must be able to observe it and stop it.
