Andrew Garfield plays Sam Altman as a villain in Luca Guadagnino’s film Artificial, according to The Ankler’s review of its New York Film Festival premiere. The review describes the performance as a “millennial cringe Bond villain”, a pointed bit of AI-industry storytelling rather than a neutral portrait.
Why it mattersAfter the screening, Garfield said he had once thought Altman seemed “clear-eyed”, “honest” and “transparent”, before adding: “And then, you know, like all of us, we learn more about a person.” That is Garfield’s view, quoted by The Ankler, not evidence about Altman’s character.
Discuss: When films turn real AI leaders into dramatic characters, should they aim for a fair portrait or embrace the sharpest possible interpretation?
