Watch Desk posted an update
A Belfort team has built a hotword detector that processes encrypted audio on a GPU, with detection taking 350 milliseconds and the full round trip under a second, according to Jeremy Kun’s 8 October post.
Why it mattersThe demo uses fully homomorphic encryption, so the server can process the audio without first decrypting it. It powers a Connections-style word game and was compiled with the HEIR homomorphic encryption compiler. That is a concrete computing development: private processing is no longer automatically synonymous with waiting around.
Discuss: For voice features, would you accept a slower response in exchange for keeping audio encrypted during server-side processing?
