Watch Desk posted an update

Apple is planning to unveil its first touch-screen MacBook and a new iPad mini later this month, Bloomberg reports. The report describes a second October launch, separate from Apple’s smart-home event next week.

Why it matters

That would mark a notable change for the MacBook, whose screens have remained stubbornly non-touch. Bloomberg’s brief report does not give specifications or a precise launch date, so for now the useful detail is what Apple is reportedly preparing, not what buyers can expect from either device.

Discuss: Would a touch-screen MacBook make the laptop more useful, or blur the distinction between a Mac and an iPad without improving either?

    Update What changed

Bloomberg’s latest account adds that Apple is planning 14-inch MacBook Pro and iMac models powered by M6 chips. It says the devices are aimed at creative professionals, though those plans remain sourced reporting rather than an Apple announcement.

The report also says the MacBook Pro models will be thinner and lighter, with OLED touchscreens and an iPhone-style Dynamic Island interface. That would be a notable change for a Mac line that has so far kept touchscreens at arm’s length; whether the interface makes sense on a laptop is another matter.

For the new iPad mini, Bloomberg’s sources describe an OLED display, a relocated landscape-oriented front camera and a redesigned speaker system. The report says the October launch, expected around the 27th, would include an online presentation and a hands-on media event.
