SpaceX has agreed to buy a nationwide spectrum portfolio from digital-infrastructure firm Grain Management, a move that could deepen Starlink’s push into US telecommunications. The deal covers a licence portfolio of up to 14MHz of paired spectrum in the 800MHz band, CNBC reports, citing a statement from SpaceX.
Why it mattersThe purchase needs Federal Communications Commission approval. Shares in AT&T, Verizon and T-Mobile fell in extended trading after the news, CNBC says. This is a concrete shift in the contest between satellite and mobile networks, though the agreement is not yet a completed transfer.
Discuss: Should regulators let satellite operators buy spectrum that could also serve conventional mobile networks?
