Tom’s Hardware reports that a Norwegian master’s student developed a method to match Counter-Strike players across accounts using mouse and keyboard input patterns. The student says it could help game developers carry cheating bans from one account to another.
Why it mattersIn the thesis results described by the report, mouse patterns identified players with 100% accuracy and keyboard patterns with 98%. Those figures come from a limited dataset, not a test across Counter-Strike 2’s full player population; shared accounts are another stated limitation. The idea could make account-hopping harder, but it also raises the stakes of getting a match wrong.
Discuss: Should anti-cheat systems be allowed to link players across accounts, and what evidence should be required before that leads to a ban?
