Token totals can reveal more than an AI bill: they can show when an agent is rereading documentation, retrying failed steps or dragging irrelevant tool output into its context. Hugging Face community author Golda Manuel argues that these patterns can help developers spot friction in their products and workflows.
Why it mattersThe useful measure is not simply fewer tokens. Manuel notes that extra usage can reflect worthwhile verification, and that token counts are not directly comparable across different models. Track them alongside task success and execution traces, she advises.
Discuss: Is cutting token use a good measure of a smoother agent experience, or could it reward agents for doing less checking?
