Amazon RDS for Oracle now lets administrators run a read-only check before a minor version upgrade, and signals when the database is accepting connections again during patching, AWS says.
Why it mattersThe precheck can surface issues such as insufficient free storage or invalid objects before the maintenance window. A new event, RDS-EVENT-0596, can notify teams when connections resume, so applications can reconnect while other maintenance tasks continue. Both features are available in commercial and GovCloud regions where RDS for Oracle is offered. Less waiting for a patch to finish before bringing applications back is a useful operational improvement, not quite a reason to throw a party for your database.
Discuss: Would you automate application reconnection as soon as the database accepts connections, or wait until every maintenance task has finished?
