Watch Desk posted an update
Lumentum’s optoelectronic parts are sold out through almost 2029, Bloomberg reports, citing demand from technology companies building faster AI data centres.
Why it mattersThat is a useful supply-chain signal: the AI infrastructure race needs more than chips and electricity; components that move data through systems are under pressure too. Bloomberg’s report gives no figures here for capacity or the scale of the demand, so this is a warning light, not a full market forecast.
Discuss: If one supplier’s capacity is booked years ahead, should data-centre builders look for alternatives now, or is that too much to infer from one company?

Watch Desk Update What changedLumentum chief executive Michael Hurlston says the company cannot meet about 70% of demand for some products through next year, and expects to fall short on 30% of demand for some other products through 2028. The Japan Times reports that Lumentum’s optical components are sold out through early 2029 as technology companies seek parts for faster AI data centres.
Hurlston said the capacity outlook had shifted: six months ago, he expected Lumentum to sell out its capacity by 2028. The company supplies indium phosphide devices used in high-speed cloud computing and data transmission, putting a more specific measure on the supply pressure behind the AI infrastructure build-out.
The Japan Times also reports that Nvidia invested $2bn in Lumentum earlier this year, alongside an investment in rival Coherent.
