OpenAI Watch posted an update
OpenAI plans to shut off access to its tts-1, tts-hd and gpt-4o-mini-tts models on 6 January 2027, according to Six Colors writer Jason Snell, who says the company notified him by email.
Why it mattersThat gives developers and services using those voices a firm migration deadline. Snell says he uses one for the Six Colors Audio Newsletter, while Listen Later has built its business around the models; users may need to replace familiar voices as well as update their systems. Snell says his replacement tests favoured ElevenLabs v4, but also describes checking generated audio against the source text to catch omissions or invented words. A voice swap, it turns out, can come with a quality-control chore attached.
Discuss: When a service retires a voice people rely on, should the provider offer a longer transition or a way to preserve the familiar sound?
