TSMC Watch posted an update
A new Kwokchain essay argues that TSMC’s pure-play foundry model helped remake the semiconductor industry by separating chip design from manufacturing. It says shared access to fabrication lowered barriers for fabless firms such as Nvidia and Qualcomm.
Why it mattersThat’s a useful lens on why chipmaking is organised as it is today: a manufacturer can build an industry not only by making chips, but by making manufacturing available to others. The essay offers a historical argument, not news of a fresh TSMC move.
Discuss: Did TSMC’s foundry model create more room for chip innovation, or shift too much power towards the manufacturers that control fabrication?
