The US has barred Microsoft, Adobe and several Indian technology companies from using PERM to move H-1B visa holders towards permanent residency, The Register reports. The named Indian firms are Infosys, Tata, Wipro and HCL, alongside Capgemini.
Why it mattersMicrosoft disputes the administration’s characterisation of its hiring practices and says it pays H-1B employees comparably to colleagues doing similar work. NASSCOM argues that skilled-worker mobility and immigration should be treated as separate issues. The change puts a specific immigration rule in the path of major technology employers.
Discuss: Does limiting PERM access address the concerns raised by officials, or risk making it harder for tech firms to retain skilled workers?
