Proton chief executive Andy Yen argues that chatbots funded by advertising could recommend products shaped by ad networks, rather than what best serves the person asking. He says that makes unbiased answers a better proposition.

Why it matters

It is a pointed view from a company building its own AI chatbot, Lumo, and an argument about how business models can shape AI products. Yen made the comments in a TechRadar interview; they are his assessment, not proof that other chatbots already behave this way. Privacy promises are easy to print on a website. The harder test is whether a company’s incentives keep them intact when there is money to be made.

Discuss: Should AI assistants be barred from ad-funded recommendations, or is clear disclosure enough to let users decide?
