Cryptographer Matthew Green argues that AI could produce surprises faster than people can update cryptographic standards. In a post quoted by Simon Willison, Green gives rough odds of 1% for a world where public-key encryption is impossible and 15% for losing confidence in today’s public-key algorithms.
Why it mattersThese are Green’s estimates, not established forecasts. His practical point is preparation: standards work takes time, so waiting for a surprise may leave too little of it.
Discuss: Should cryptography standards bodies prepare now for AI-driven surprises, even if the risks remain highly uncertain?
