The Trump administration is replacing “artificial intelligence” with “super intelligence” on US government documents and websites, CNN reports, following an executive order in late September. Trump has argued that “artificial” makes intelligence sound fake.
Why it mattersThe terminology matters: as philosopher Nick Bostrom explained to CNN, AI is a broad term for intelligent information processing, while superintelligence usually describes a hypothetical system that radically exceeds people across cognitive domains. A new label does not make today’s systems superintelligent, however much a rebrand might hope otherwise.
Discuss: Should governments rename AI to make it sound more capable, or stick with established terms even when politicians dislike them?
