Chinese factories are skipping some traditional digitalisation and moving directly to AI agents, Black Lake chief executive Zhou Yuxiang told the South China Morning Post. He says the agents are being deployed across operations, though the report does not detail particular factory deployments or results.

Why it matters

Zhou links the trend to Beijing’s “AI plus” initiative, which includes a target of integrating AI into 90 per cent of China’s economy by 2030. That is a policy target, not evidence that the goal is already on track. The claim points to a striking possible shortcut: adopting AI agents without first building out the full digital systems many factories might otherwise have used. What should count as proof that this leap is working: more deployments, measurable productivity gains, or something else?
