Dr Mohamed Almarei has been named the first recipient of MBZUAI’s Ruwwad AI Scholars Fellowship and will spend two years at the University of Oxford applying AI to synthetic biology.
Why it mattersAlmarei says he aims to use data-driven models to predict and control living systems, potentially reducing reliance on costly wet-lab experiments. A practical research goal, rather than another promise that AI will change everything by Tuesday.
Discuss: Should AI models in biology be judged mainly by how well they predict living systems, or by whether they reduce the need for costly experiments?
