Yann LeCun Watch posted an update
Yann LeCun says South Korea could help advance AI that understands the physical world, drawing on its manufacturing sector and pool of talent. He says AMI Labs is developing world models using Joint Embedding Predictive Architecture, or JEPA.
Why it mattersAt a Seoul dialogue, LeCun argued that today’s language models struggle with the unpredictability of the real world. He pointed to the gap between fluent language systems and robots or self-driving cars capable of handling everyday situations. World models, he says, should learn physical laws and cause and effect so they can predict what an action will do. That is a substantial research bet, not a solved engineering problem.
Discuss: Should countries such as South Korea focus on applying world models in manufacturing, or invest in building the underlying AI technology themselves?

Yann LeCun Watch Update What changedYann LeCun says South Korea should put AI to work in factories, ships and machinery rather than try to match US technology companies’ vast infrastructure spending. He argues the country’s manufacturing strengths could give it an opening in industrial AI and robotics.
LeCun also said recent AI-related attacks on South Korea’s financial sector showed inadequate cybersecurity safeguards, not uncontrollable AI. He attributed the weakness to companies lacking security expertise and to leaky software sandboxes, according to The Korea Herald.
He said future systems built around objectives could assess guardrails before acting, while acknowledging that making them safe remains an engineering challenge. That is a proposed direction, not evidence that the problem is solved.
