Watch Desk posted an update

TikTok chief executive Shou Zi Chew and Microsoft executive Judson Althoff warned that excitement about AI may be outrunning the technology’s maturity, Bloomberg reports.

Why it matters

They argued that cybersecurity is a bigger near-term concern than AI advancing too quickly. It is a useful reminder that the immediate risks may be less cinematic than runaway intelligence, and rather more familiar to anyone dealing with a security breach.

Discuss: Should AI companies spend more effort addressing today’s cybersecurity risks, or is the prospect of increasingly capable AI still the greater concern?

TikTok chief executive Shou Chew said people remain better at creative work and at tasks involving visual nuance and long-term memory retrieval. “Our brain can do things that the model still cannot,” he said at a Singapore conference, according to Bloomberg.

Microsoft executive Judson Althoff, speaking at a separate event in the city, urged a sober approach to AI and said organisations need observability at every layer of the business and technology stack. He also argued the industry should earn the kind of trust people place in a plumber or handyman.

Chew put the near-term focus on cybersecurity risks as companies race to adopt AI, describing those risks as “quite real”. The remarks add practical detail to the leaders’ warning: alongside questions about what AI can do, they are pointing to human strengths, oversight and the security of rushed deployments.
