Transport for London is staging virtual-reality demonstrations at eight London stations to show passengers how to respond safely when they witness a hate crime. The events run from 12 to 16 October, with additional free online training sessions funded by TfL.
Why it mattersThe BBC reports that 2,396 hate crimes were recorded on London’s transport network between January and August 2026, a 36% rise on the same period last year. TfL says improved reporting and international events are among the factors behind the increase. The VR sessions put participants in the position of a bystander and demonstrate ways to support someone being targeted. A practical use for immersive tech, and rather more consequential than showing off a virtual sofa.
Discuss: Should public transport authorities spend more on bystander training like this, or put those resources into preventing and responding to hate crime directly?
