Artificial Analysis has launched FrontierCode 1.1, a benchmark designed to test whether AI models make code changes that maintainers would actually merge. Its results suggest that even leading models still struggle with that practical test.
Why it mattersArtificial Analysis says Claude Opus 5.5 leads with an average score of 52% and a 58% pass rate. The benchmark was built by Cognition with open-source maintainers, tying the result to the people who have to decide whether a proposed change is good enough to land. That is a more useful question than whether a model can produce code that looks convincing.
Discuss: How much weight should maintainers give benchmark scores when deciding whether AI-generated contributions are ready to merge?
