China Mobile has tripled the reported processing capacity of its Hohhot data centre to 20,100 petaflops, with 16,700 petaflops dedicated to AI and smart computing, the South China Morning Post reports.
Why it mattersThe recently completed expansion reportedly cost US$403 million and brings the site’s total power capacity to 120 megawatts. The figures come from Inner Mongolia Daily, cited by the SCMP. That is a substantial addition to the computing infrastructure being built for AI. The awkwardly large numbers are easier to appreciate when you remember that the power bill has to keep up too.
Discuss: Is a 120-megawatt AI hub a sensible investment in future demand, or a bet on computing growth that still has to pay off?
