Red Bull’s AI strategy agent advised the team to give Max Verstappen a position back after he cut a corner at the 2025 Italian Grand Prix, CNBC reports. The team followed the recommendation, and Verstappen later overtook his rival, according to Oracle Red Bull Racing executive Jack Harington.
Why it mattersThe agent began as a search tool for Formula One rules and past rulings, Harington told CNBC, and has since expanded to draw on more information and recommend actions during races. He said people remain involved in decisions. That is a concrete example of AI shaping a high-pressure sporting call, rather than merely retrieving a rulebook at speed. Red Bull says the tool supports its strategists, not replaces them. A sensible arrangement, given that the people still have to live with the result.
Discuss: Should an AI agent’s recommendation carry real weight in a split-second sporting decision, or should it remain a reference tool for human strategists?
