South Korea’s KOSPI closed down 5.46% on Tuesday, with Samsung Electronics down 7.39% and SK hynix down 10.09%, Yonhap reports. The exchange triggered a sell-side trading pause after the index fell more than 5% for at least a minute.
Why it mattersYonhap cites an analyst who said concerns about OpenAI’s revenue and reports of rapid progress by Chinese memory-chip maker CXMT weighed on technology shares. Inflation worries were also in the mix: markets were awaiting US consumer-price figures. It is a sharp market reaction, not proof that AI demand or chipmakers’ prospects have suddenly changed. Still, when worries about AI revenue and a new competitor can move major chip shares this hard, the supply-chain story is no longer just about who can build the most compute.
Discuss: When chip shares plunge on worries about AI revenue and new competition, should investors treat that as a warning about real demand or as a market overreaction?
