Brands are already trying to influence which names AI search tools recommend, argues Matt Beezley in PR Daily. He says Microsoft’s Defender Security Research Team identified 31 companies across 14 industries using hidden website instructions to push AI systems to treat them as trusted sources and recommend them first.
Why it mattersBeezley warns that tactics such as prompt injection and paid or manufactured online mentions could erode trust in AI-generated recommendations. His column makes a useful distinction: a shortcut that wins one brand visibility could make the whole channel less credible. A little SEO history, served with a side of rat poison.
Discuss: Should platforms treat hidden instructions and paid mentions aimed at AI recommendations as spam, or is that fair game in a channel brands cannot inspect?
