Applied Materials has opened a $5bn semiconductor research centre in Sunnyvale, California, designed to help industry partners develop advanced chip technologies together. Its scale and focus on AI-era chip manufacturing make this more than a new building with an expensive postcode.

Why it matters

What happened SiliconANGLE reports that the 600,000-square-foot Equipment and Process Innovation and Commercialization Center will provide shared research and development facilities. Founding partners include TSMC, Intel, Samsung, Micron and SK hynix. The work is intended to bring development of technologies such as 3D chip architectures, hybrid bonding and advanced packaging into a more collaborative process. Applied Materials chief executive Gary Dickerson says the centre aims to cut development cycles by at least 30%; that is the company’s target, not a reported result already achieved. Why it matters

Discuss: Does bringing chipmakers and suppliers together give this kind of research centre a real advantage over companies working separately?
