Geoffrey Hinton Watch posted an update

Geoffrey Hinton has argued that AI companies should not be left to regulate themselves, criticising US President Donald Trump’s approach to AI safeguards. The comments came in an interview reported by International Business Times UK on 13 October.

Why it matters

Hinton also challenged Trump’s use of “superintelligence”, saying the term has a clear technical meaning. That puts the debate over AI oversight alongside a smaller but revealing argument about who gets to define the technology. This is Hinton’s view, not evidence that a particular system is unsafe. But when a prominent AI researcher argues for outside safeguards, the question is whether that means enforceable rules or simply better promises from the companies involved.

Discuss: Should AI developers help set the rules governing their systems, or should binding safeguards be written and enforced independently of the industry?
