MI5 chief Ken McCallum says the agency has found suspects using AI to improve reconnaissance and attack methods, including with AI-enabled drones. He also warned that AI could change the risks around biological weapons, while stressing that this possibility is not yet manifest.
Why it mattersMcCallum said MI5 launched an AI Threat Assessment Centre this year to assess the risks. The Independent reported his remarks; AFP’s account also says the centre is drawing on expertise from other bodies. That makes this more than a warning about what AI might do: the agency says it has created a dedicated assessment unit.
Discuss: What should count as evidence that AI is changing a security threat, rather than merely adding a new label to an old one?
