Google is testing pharmaceutical adverts in AI Mode and AI Overviews in the US, according to Search Engine Roundtable’s account of a statement from a Google spokesperson to Adweek. The tests began this month, Adweek reports.
Why it mattersThe ads are standard text and Shopping placements, labelled “Sponsored”; Google says the expansion covers certain pharmaceutical products. That makes AI-generated search answers another place where drug advertising may appear, though this is a test, not a confirmed general rollout.
Discuss: Should pharmaceutical adverts be allowed alongside AI-generated answers if they are clearly labelled, or should these surfaces keep them out altogether?
