Apple researchers say the company’s Minions system pools idle GPUs across Macs to run AI inference tasks. The Register reports that some jobs previously waited more than ten hours for central GPU capacity, while Minions can often start them within minutes.
Why it mattersThe system breaks requests into subtasks, runs them on Macs and can reassign work if a machine fails. It is a practical way to make spare compute useful, rather than a claim that a Mac network replaces a dedicated GPU cluster.
Discuss: Should organisations pool idle computers for AI workloads, or do the coordination and reliability trade-offs make dedicated GPU clusters the better choice?
