Hollywood is turning tech leaders, including Sam Altman, into screen characters as public confidence in big technology companies slides. The Observer reports that Artificial, Luca Guadagnino’s Altman drama, is due in cinemas on 25 December.
Why it mattersThe cultural moment comes with a commercial question: The Social Reckoning opened to $5.5 million domestically, below expectations, the Observer says. Its article also cites surveys suggesting distrust of prominent technology leaders and companies. These films may be trying to stage a reckoning, but a sharp portrait is not the same thing as accountability. And if audiences stay home, Hollywood’s verdict on tech power may be rather less influential than its trailers suggest.
Discuss: Can films about AI and tech leaders meaningfully shape public debate, or do they mostly preach to people who already have a view?
