CNET reports that software engineer Brandon Thomas has released 13 free, open-source apps under the name ArtCraft, built with AI to replicate features of popular Adobe and Microsoft programmes. Among them are PhotoCraft, WordCraft and DeckCraft, aimed at users who want alternatives to Photoshop, Word and PowerPoint.
Why it mattersThe appeal is plain: a no-subscription option you can customise. The trade-off is less tidy. CNET flags questions about usefulness, security and long-term support, and says an expert warned that sharing a quick-fix app could invite legal trouble. Free is a price, not a safety review.
Discuss: Would you trust an AI-made, open-source alternative for everyday work, or are the support, security and legal assurances from established software worth paying for?
