The UAE’s acting higher education minister says universities need to overhaul courses and teaching methods as AI changes the skills employers want. He is calling for closer ties between universities and industry, not announcing a new AI policy or a timetable for reform.
Why it mattersThe National reports that Dr Abdulrahman Al Awar spoke at an education event in Abu Dhabi. He said the ministry’s Outcome-Based Evaluation Framework is intended to push universities towards being more responsive to students’ and employers’ needs. Students quoted by the paper also argue for more emphasis on practical skills than grades, and better preparation to use AI tools in research. That makes this a useful signal of the debate, rather than evidence that university courses have changed. Will universities reshape what they teach for AI, or mostly add new tools to old curricula?
Discuss: Should universities redesign courses around the skills AI is changing, or focus on teaching students how to use AI within existing disciplines?
