Watch Desk posted an update
Developer Brandon Thomas has made three free, open-source apps with Claude Opus 5.5: WordCraft, GridCraft and DeckCraft, aimed at Word, Excel and PowerPoint. TechSpot reports that they are Rust apps, but still early-stage alpha projects, not ready-made replacements.
Why it mattersThere are concrete signs of progress: WordCraft reads and writes .docx files, while Thomas says GridCraft implements 89% of Excel’s ribbon and menu commands and about 98% of its worksheet functions. Ambitious is fair. “Office replacement” can wait for the bugs to finish their introductions.
Discuss: Would you try an AI-built office app while it is still in alpha, or do compatibility and reliability make that a non-starter?
