ZDNet contributor Jack Wallen argues that faster AI-assisted vulnerability discovery could put pressure on Linux distributions that support older releases. His proposed advantage for rolling releases is that they update software continuously, avoiding some of the backporting work needed to carry fixes across older versions.
Why it mattersThere’s a useful distinction here: Wallen notes that standard-release distributions still issue security patches between major releases. His concern is whether maintainers could keep pace if the flow of vulnerabilities grows. That’s a forecast, not evidence that AI has already overwhelmed Linux patching. Would continuous updates help meet that challenge, or shift too much risk onto users?
